More than 140 prominent women environmentalists from 60 countries, including seven environment ministers and other high level representatives, met at the Headquarters of UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) in Nairobi, Kenya and expressed their concerns about the global environment. This was the first such meeting in which world leading women environment professionals convened.

Under the banner 'Women as the Voice for the Environment' (WAVE), the first global women's assembly on the environment highlighted the crucial roles women play in conservation and sustainable development.

Among the headline speakers is Prof. Wangari Maathai, winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize. She spoke on the theme 'A World in Need of Women's Leadership'. She is currently Kenya's Deputy Minister for Environment and Natural Resources.
